Aerobic methane synthesis and dynamics in a river water environment

چکیده

Reports of aerobic biogenic methane (CH4) have generated new views about CH4 sources in nature. We examine this phenomenon the free-flowing Yellowstone river wherein concentrations were tracked as a function environmental conditions, phototrophic microorganisms (using chlorophyll a, Chl proxy), well targeted methylated amines known to be associated with process. was positively correlated temperature and although diurnal measurements showed greatest during night lowest maximal solar irradiation. efflux from surface greater quiescent edge waters (71–94 μmol m−2 d) than open flowing current (~ 57 d). Attempts increase flux by disturbing benthic environment water directly below 1.0 m deep) or at varying distances (0–5 m) upstream chamber failed flux. Glycine betaine (GB), dimethylamine methylamine (MMA) observed throughout summer-long study, increasing period coinciding marked decline suggesting lytic event led their release; however, did not correspond increased concentrations. Spiking GB MMA yielded significantly nonspiked controls, illustrating metabolic potential microbiome. In summary, study provides evidence that: (1) are involved synthesis environment; (2) microbiome possesses convert CH4; (3) dynamic diurnally summer active months.

Aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of glutaraldehyde in a river water-sediment system.

Material balance studies of glutaraldehyde in a river water-sediment system demonstrate that glutaraldehyde preferred to remain in the water phase. Glutaraldehyde was metabolized rapidly under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The pseudo-first-order half-life of catabolism, based on the loss of glutaraldehyde from the water phase, was 10.6 h aerobically and 7.7 h anaerobically. In contrast...
